Why I’ve Always Loved Superheroes

Written By Desiree U. Angeles, Philippines Growing up, I was a huge fan of Batman. I know it’s probably unusual for a girl to like this character, but I’ve always found the winged hero fascinating because he could defeat villains even though he didn’t have any supernatural powers. Perhaps I loved Batman also because I […]

I’m Stumped

The riddle stumped me: What is greater than God—and more evil than the devil? The poor have it. The rich need it. And if you eat it you will die.

Life was not easy for Eric Christopherson growing up, but he found respite playing sports. And he was good at it. So good that he was a former first-round pick for the San Francisco Giants. But life got messy with selfish living, drinking, and gambling—and he knew something was missing. He called out to Jesus to fill in the empty spaces, and he encourages others to do the same.

Trusting God

Years ago, God put it on the hearts of my wife and me that I should attend Bible college. We didn’t fully know why or how, but we trusted that He had a plan. Our problem was that we were in a tough financial condition. We were literally praying for food to feed our family week by week. Then the due date for the payment of the tuition fees arrived, and we didn’t have a penny to put toward the cost.

Another lesson from the life of Barnabas

When the disciples heard about a church in need of help, they didn’t send a teacher, a judge, or a bodyguard. They sent “The Encourager” instead! Take a look with us at the impact an encouraging person can make in the family of faith.

Doctor Who: The Unlikeliest of Heroes

Written By Karen Kwek, Singapore I can’t wait for The Doctor to return in August 2015. No, not any of the medics in Scrubs or Grey’s Anatomy—this is The Doctor who pre-dated them all. I’m talking about Doctor Who, the British science fiction series that has picked up a worldwide following in recent years. In […]

Anna & Simeon

Simeon and the widow Anna lived long enough to see the joys and sorrows of life. Yet they never experienced more hope, or sadness, than when Israel’s long-awaited Messiah was brought to the temple as an infant to be dedicated.

Marked By His Name

In July 1860, the world’s first nursing school opened at St. Thomas Hospital in London. Today that school is part of the King’s College, where nursing students are called Nightingales. The school—like modern nursing itself—was established by Florence Nightingale, who revolutionized nursing during the Crimean War. When prospective nurses complete their training, they take the “Nightingale Pledge,” a reflection of her ongoing impact on nursing.

Centurions In The New Testament

Several centurions are mentioned in the New Testament. The accounts of the more prominent ones reveal the degree to which Christ’s message and influence were crossing social, ethnic, and political lines and barriers.

The Centurion of Capernaum (Matt. 8:5-13)
Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him, saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at…

Pocketful of Rocks

Something about my 4-year-old daughter’s outfit looked odd. Taking a closer look, I noticed that her pockets were packed with stones. While our family had been roaming an outdoor area, she had been picking up pebbles and saving them. I had to empty her pockets; it was making it hard for her to walk!

One Man’s Quest to Bring Hope

Written By Edna Ho, Malaysia Browse through the newspapers in Malaysia, you’re likely to read news about Kelvin Wan and his team distributing food, medicine and other forms of aid to poor villagers or victims of a flood or fire. The founder of Hope Place, a welfare group in Kuching, is well known in this […]

Calming The Storm

While Hurricane Katrina headed toward the coast of Mississippi, a retired pastor and his wife left their home and went to a shelter. Their daughter pleaded with them to go to Atlanta where she could take care of them, but the couple couldn’t get any money to make the trip because the banks were closed. After the storm had passed, they returned to their home to get a few belongings, and were able to salvage only a few family photos floating in the water. Then, when the man was taking his father’s photo out of its frame so it could…
